The 2020 vintage in the 13 German wine-growing regions produced a wine must yield of 8.5 million hectolitres.

This was announced by the German Wine Institute (DWI) on the basis of surveys conducted by the Federal Statistical Office. The final harvest is two percent below the ten-year average of 8.7 million hectolitres and two percent above the previous year's harvest. In relation to the vineyard area of 100,705 hectares in Germany, the average yield is 84 hectolitres per hectare.

Riesling dominates

Two thirds of the harvest produced wine must from white grapes and one third came from red grapes. With 5.3 million hectolitres, the five most important grape varieties in Germany make up 62 percent of the total harvest. Around a quarter of the wine must production (2.1 million hl) comes from Germany's most important grape variety, Riesling. 1.1 million hectolitres were harvested from Müller-Thurgau, 0.8 million hectolitres from Dornfelder, 0.7 million hectolitres from the Pinot Noir variety and 0.5 million hectolitres from Pinot Gris.

Big regional differences

A differentiated view of the harvest results according to winegrowing areas shows quite large differences compared to the previous year's yields. They range from a plus of 33 percent on the Mosel to a minus of 22 percent in Franken. This is largely due to the wide variation in rainfall distribution last year, as well as late frost damage which led to additional yield losses, particularly in Franken, Saale-Unstrut and Sachsen as well as in parts of Württemberg.

Excellent quality

In terms of quality, the 2020 vintage is classified as very good in all quality levels. The white wines are very typical of the variety, well balanced with an intense fruit. The red varieties particularly benefited from the warm weather last year. Wine lovers can look forward to brightly coloured 2020 red wines with an intense berry aroma and velvety texture.
